TCEP researchers find that online tutoring does improve low-achieving middle school student's math achievement.
Dr. Shanan Chappell, Ms. Pamela Arnold, Dr. John Nunnery, and Dr. Melva Grant, investigated the impact of synchronous online tutoring on low-achieving middle school math achievement. One hundred nineteen students were compared using a within- (before and after intervention scores) and between-group (those receiving the intervention and those with no intervention) design. Students being tutored received ongoing progress monitoring of their learning, guided practice, and multiple explanations and representations of target concepts. The findings suggest that the tutoring contributed to statistically significant gains in student assessment scores.
