Dr. Joanna Garner conducted a workshop for Frank Batten College of Engineering & Technology on "More than just Slides: Re-conceptualizing Presentations using the Assertion-Evidence Approach."
The default setting of PowerPoint stands in opposition to research that has pinpointed key principals needed for effective multimedia learning. In this interactive workshop, faculty members will learn about an alternative, the Assertion-Evidence model, which allows faculty and students to create engaging lectures and research presentations that overcome the default structures of PowerPoint. Contemporary research reveals improved audience comprehension and retention of information while using the Assertion-Evidence approach. Participants will have the opportunity to practice creating slides using this approach. By the end of his session, you will be able to model Assertion-Evidence slides and consider how to use them in conjunction with other teaching materials and methods.
