About the Kaufman Award

Landmark Communications Inc. established the Kaufman Award to honor philanthropist Charles L. Kaufman. Kaufman Hall, Old Dominion's Engineering building was named in his honor. The prize will be awarded to a graduating senior "who has exerted an exceptional and constructive influence on the university, its students or the community by demonstrating the highest qualities of leadership and service."

Up to 10 students will be selected for the Kaufman Award. The recipient of the Kaufman Award will be selected from this group and will receive $10,000. The runner-up will receive a monetary award. The recipients will be announced at the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ's annual Student Awards & Honors Event.Ìý

Basic eligibility criteria are:

1. Undergraduate Graduating seniorÌýwho graduated in August and December of 2024 or will graduate in May 2025
2. Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPAÌýand
3. Exceptional record of service to Old Dominion 91¶ÌÊÓƵ or the greater Hampton Roads community.

Students meeting the basic eligibility requirements are invited to submit an application. A completed application includes:

• A letter of support by any faculty, staff, chaplain, or alumnus of the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ
• Two letters of recommendation. They should be written by individuals who know the merit of your work or who can cite examples of your character, leadership, and/or academic ability.
• A completed Kaufman Award application

A screening committee consisting of representatives from the academic colleges and the campus community will review the applications, conduct personal interviews, and forward recommendations to President Brian O. Hemphill, Ph.D. for his review and final selection.
