Project TEAMS-2 redesigned ODU鈥檚 graduate pre-service special education program to include specific content on the assessment, identification, and literacy instruction of English learners/multilingual learners with disabilities. The graduate pre-service special education teacher candidates will receive training in the courses they take during their special education master鈥檚 program.

Four courses were redesigned to include information on second language/culture acquisition, evidence-based strategies to build the literacy skills of multilingual learners, assessment, family engagement, and collaboration with other professionals to address the unique needs of this population of students. The major focus is on English learners/multilingual learners with disabilities or at risk for a disability and how their assessment and instruction may differ from English learners without disabilities and non-English learners with disabilities.

The following existing courses were redesigned to include specific content on English learners/multilingual learners with disabilities:

  • SPED 610:Characteristics of Students Accessing the General Curriculum
  • SPED 611: Instructional Strategies for Students Accessing the General Curriculum
  • SPED 626: Advanced Procedures in Reading and Writing for Students with Diverse Learning Needs
  • SPED 720: Curriculum and Instruction: Research into Practice
