Faculty from the Batten College of Engineering and Technology and the Old Dominion 91短视频 College of Sciences recently participated in a special workshop focused on the use of AI within their respective fields.

About 40 faculty members attended the workshop, titled 鈥淎rtificial Intelligence (AI) for Sciences and Engineering Faculty,鈥 held on February 27 at ODU.

鈥淎I is a transformative technology reshaping nearly every aspect of human civilization. As educators and researchers, it is imperative that we stay informed about the latest AI developments and integrate this technology effectively into our work. However, we must also remain vigilant about the challenges and risks associated with AI,鈥 said Yuzhong Shen, Ph.D., interim associate dean for Research and Innovation in the Batten College of Engineering and Technology.

The event was coordinated by Dr. Shen and Jingdong Mao, Ph.D., interim associate dean for Research in the College of Sciences.

Workshop topics included an introduction to AI for research, AI for scientific discovery, applications of AI in computer vision and environmental science, large language models and prompt engineering.

Megan Witherow, Ph.D., a postdoctoral research associate with the ODU Research Foundation, presented a case study on AI-enabled facial expression analysis for behavioral research in autism.

Other speakers included Jian Wu, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science; Frank Liu, Ph.D., professor of computer science and the inaugural director of ODU's School of Data Science; and Chung Hao Chen, Ph.D., and Jim Leathrum, Ph.D., both from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

During the event, participants discussed ethical considerations in AI鈥攕uch as bias, interpretability, and reproducibility鈥攁nd explored funding opportunities and potential collaborations.

鈥淭he workshop was a tremendous success, with strong attendance and positive feedback from participants. I鈥檇 like to thank the speakers for their informative and insightful presentations, as well as the attendees for their engagement and enthusiasm,鈥 said Dr. Shen.
