Cybercrime is gaining attention because of a series of high-profile incidents and our dependence on the internet. Members of the ODU community can learn about this emerging issue, and enjoy a beverage at the same time, at the next ODU Science Pub.
Associate Sociology Professor Roderick Graham will speak about the topic at 6 p.m. Nov. 27 at Smartmouth Brewing, 1309 Raleigh Ave. in Norfolk's Ghent neighborhood.
Cybercrimes come in many forms. From cyber-trespassing to cyber-violence, perpetrators have found ways to create a mask of deception for their actions on the internet. Graham has broken cybercrimes into four areas and will discuss his analysis.
Statistics show that global cybercrime damages will cost $6 trillion annually by 2021. This means that this issue is growing and has found a new setting - social media.
"It's early in research, but it seems as if it's females that are more likely or willing to send the text (than males)," said Graham, who will explain why this is.
Graham said anyone can be prone to the short- or long-term effects of cybercrimes. The question is what can you do to prevent it? Graham will discuss cybercrimes, cybercrime prevention and other forms of awareness on the subject.
