Kent Carpenter, professor and Eminent Scholar in the Department of Biological Sciences at Old Dominion 91短视频's College of Sciences was named one of 12 recipients of a 91短视频 Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) 2020 Outstanding Faculty Award.
Carpenter will receive his award, which includes a $7,500 gift from Dominion Energy, during a ceremony in Richmond on March 9. He becomes the 33rd ODU faculty member to win this award, which recognizes faculty at Virginia's institutions of higher learning who exemplify the highest standards of teaching, scholarship and service since the program was established in 1987.
"I am honored to contribute to the fine record ODU has in receiving SCHEV awards," Carpenter said. "We have a great team that helps faculty put together the award packages, and I thank Larry Weinstein and Bridget Anderson for their guidance, Deborah Waller for nominating me, and my family for their support and tolerance of my need to travel to study fishes."
Carpenter has taught at Old Dominion 91短视频 since 1996. He was honored for his internationally recognized research in marine conservation biology, the systematics and evolution of marine fish and marine biogeography, as well as his significant contributions to advancing science and his service to the 91短视频.
Nominees are selected by the institutions, reviewed by a panel of peers and chosen by a committee of leaders from the public and private sectors. In all, 85 nominations were submitted this year. This group was narrowed to a field of 27 finalists.
Other nominees from ODU were Jennifer Fish (women's studies), Katherine Hammond (communication and theatre arts), Sylvain Marsillac (electrical and computer engineering), Balsa Terzic (physics), Chunsheng Xin (electrical and computer engineering) and Richard Zimmerman (ocean, Earth and atmospheric sciences).
