Old Dominion 91¶ÌÊÓƵ's Wayne Talley was recently named a recipient of the 2018 Onassis Prize in Shipping, an international award recognizing his work on ports and the risks of terrorism and piracy to the shipping industry.
Talley, professor of maritime and supply chain management and executive director of Old Dominion's Maritime Institute, shared the $200,000 prize with Mary R. Brooks of Dalhousie 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.
The Onassis Prizes recognize outstanding academics in the fields of finance, international trade and shipping. Prizes are sponsored by the Onassis Foundation and, together with Cass Business School in London, are awarded every three years.
"The Onassis Prizes are awarded for the fourth time and one can safely say that they have become the most highly respected international awards in the areas of finance, international trade and shipping," said Costas Grammenos, chairman of the Costas Grammenos Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance at Cass. "I warmly congratulate the recipients whose distinguished achievements have profoundly influenced their disciplines and continue to have an impact on academic thinking and business conduct worldwide."
The awards will be formally presented in London on Sept. 24.
An eminent scholar at ODU's Strome College of Business, Talley joined the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ faculty in 1972. He is a founding faculty member in the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ's Maritime Institute, which was created through a 91¶ÌÊÓƵ/business community partnership in Hampton Roads.
The Maritime Institute's mission is to provide the highest quality maritime, ports and logistics management education, training and research to meet regional, national and international needs. The Institute provides a focal point for educational services and research programming that is responsive to port-related needs of Hampton Roads, Virginia and other port-related facilities in the world.
Talley received the 2016 Herbert O. Whitten Transportation Research Forum Service Award and Old Dominion's 2010 Provost's Award for Leadership in International Education.
