One of the most decorated soldiers of his generation will offer a pointed critique of U.S. foreign policy at the Waldo Family Lecture Series on International Relations at 7 p.m.Oct. 3 at Old Dominion 91¶ÌÊÓƵ.
Retired Col. Jack Jacobs, who was awarded the Medal of Honor, two Silver Stars and three Bronze Stars for his bravery in two tours in Vietnam, will offer a lecture titled "America in the World — All Tactics, No Strategy."
Jacobs will speak in the North Cafeteria of Webb 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. To RSVP, go to /univevents. Parking is available in Garage E, 49th St. and Bluestone Ave.
Jacobs is best-known for his analysis and commentary on NBC during periods of international tensions.
Jacobs retired from the Army in 1987 and holds an endowed chair at West Point in humanities and public affairs. He is also co-author of the memoir "If Not Now, When?", which won a Colby Award in 2010. The award recognizes a work that has made a major contribution to the understanding of military history, intelligence operations or international affairs.
There will be a book signing following Jacobs' speech, with the books supplied by the 91¶ÌÊÓƵ Village Bookstore.
ODU's first endowed lecture series, the Waldo Family Lecture Series on International Relations was established in 1985. Because of the area's significant military presence and proximity to an international port, the family chose international relations as the series' theme.
Over the years, renowned speakers in government, foreign affairs, journalism, education and public service have visited the campus and met with students and faculty. Support for the lecture series comes from the Waldo family, friends and the business community.
The series honors the memory of Loren Pierce Waldo Jr., William Joseph Waldo, Robert Hendren Waldo, Susan Waldo O'Hara, Julia Ann Waldo Campbell and Harry Creekmur Waldo.
