Microbial production of organic metal-binding ligands in response to dust and hydrothermal iron inputs to seawater
ABSTRACT
Dust and hydrothermal vents are important sources of the micronutrient iron to the ocean. However, iron is poorly soluble in seawater and the ultimate fate of dust and hydrothermal iron fluxes are poorly constrained. This talk will explore how the production of organic metal-binding compounds called ligands, can stabilize these external sources of iron to the ocean and influence the solubility and longevity of iron in the ocean. Specifically, the seminar will discuss the environmental and metabolic triggers of the production of strong ligands, or siderophores, and how understanding the cycling of organic metal-binding compounds gives insights into the bioavailability and reactivity of iron in seawater.
